Who doesn’t love holidays? Whether it’s the parties with friends and loved ones, the days off from work, or simply the festive cheer that comes along with it, holidays are great ways to celebrate life in its own colorful ways.
But if you are struggling with losing weight, holidays can become a problem. That’s because along with the festive cheer and celebration, huge servings of food and drink are a part of holiday festivities.
And because you are with friends or family, it’s hard to turn down that stuffed turkey your Aunt Gracie made for Thanksgiving, lest you break her kind little heart.
And now this problem has become more prominent with Christmas and New Year coming along very shortly.
Fortunately, there are ways in which you can cope with such a dilemma, and thus enjoy the holidays without the guilt.
1. Try to control your portions.
Like most things in life, the secret to success in maintaining your weight despite the holiday eat-all-you-can buffet is to take it in moderation.
It’s ok to take a bite of Mom’s chocolate cake, just don’t park a huge slab of it in your plate. Maintain the sizes of your servings to a minimum and monitor what and how much you eat especially when it comes to fatty foods. And don’t even think about getting another serving.
By eating with a little restraint and moderation, you can enjoy the holiday as well as the food without gaining weight.
2. Deal with your cravings.
Along with the holidays, food cravings are a standard part of your life. And unless they invent a drug that could shut down the part of your brain which induces cravings, you will just have to deal with it.
However, dealing with cravings can be especially hard during the holidays with all that food around. So if you are invited to a holiday dinner, avoid the tables which serve fatty foods.
But if avoidance is out of the question, then your best option is to find another alternative activity to eating. Maybe it’s about time to hit the dance floor or meet up with old friends, don’t you think?
3. Eat Wisely.
People usually associate fatty, cholesterol-rich foods such as roasted chicken or cake with the holidays, but you will be surprised to find out that there are also healthier options you can find in your holiday platter.
Aside from salads, you should skip the casseroles in favor of steamed vegetables, and you can cut down on calories dramatically if you simply opt for fruit as your dessert.
4. Stay active.
Whether you like it or not, as long as there are people there will be holidays. And as long as there are holidays there will be lots and lots of food.
So just like what they say in the Boy Scouts, it’s best to be prepared. That is why when the holiday season comes in, you should increase the amount of physical activity that you exert daily to anticipate the food that comes with the holidays.
Regular visits to the gym or jogging every morning is highly recommended although taking a 30-minute brisk walk a couple of days a week would also do wonders. If the weather is fine and you haven’t got much to do, get out those rubber shoes and take a walk.
5. Maintain a positive attitude.
People who try and loss weight tend to lose their drive during the holidays. But the secret in staying the course in weight loss during the festive seasons is by keeping things positive and never giving up. And if you did make a mistake or two during this period; it’s OK. You can always try again.
